Psychedelic and Vintage Animations by Richard Balzer
Based in New York, artist Richard Balzer’s obsession with praxinoscopes, camera obscuras, anamorphic mirrors, zoetropes and other optical mechanisms is manifested in his animated work on his Tumblr blog. The psychedelic and whimsical illustrations possess a vintage sensibility, which is uniquely composed with the use of a spinning disc. The phenakistoscopes (one fo these first devices used to developed animated figures to create the illusion of motion) reveal morbid and antique designs, which mirror a mid 19th-century European fashion.
